Gen Z has launched a historic movement. With two main agendas—direct election of the Prime Minister and a stable government for four years—this movement began on Bhadra 23, 2082, i.e., September 8, 2025. The movement, sparked by the KP Oli-led government’s decision on Bhadra 19 to ban 25 social media platforms, started as the “Nepo Baby Gen Z Movement” from Maitighar Mandala and reached inside the parliament building in Baneshwor. This is likely the first such incident in Nepal’s history where youths succeeded in breaking the parliament gate and entering despite the presence of security forces. Immediately afterward, security forces used tear gas and fired shots, and information has been received that 19 people have lost their lives so far. The movement, with slogans like “Ensure an environment where we can work and live; this country belongs to me too; now the youth will take responsibility for running the state,” has received widespread support across the country. The Gen Z movement has taken a fierce form in major cities such as Itahari, Biratnagar, Jhapa, Pokhara, Butwal, Nepalgunj, Hetauda, and Ilam. Movement coordinator Miraj Dhungana announced that, starting tomorrow, all educational institutions will be closed, and the Gen Z generation will intensify the movement, pausing only after achieving tangible outcomes. The Gen Z movement has received spontaneous goodwill and support from all sectors.
